The frenum in your mouth may be removed through a procedure known as a frenectomy to increase the range of motion of the tongue or to close a gap between your teeth. If you need a frenectomy, Dr. James Jacobs & Dr. Tara Bogart in Midtown West, Manhattan, can help. To learn more, call the New York City office or request an appointment online.
A frenectomy is a simple surgical procedure that involves the removal of one or both frena from the mouth. The frenum is a connective tissue membrane that attaches one surface within the mouth to another. Frenum are found connecting the lips to gum above the top two front teeth, or below the bottom two front teeth. Frena can also be found connecting the tongue to the bottom of the mouth (tongue-tie), or from the insides of the cheeks to the gum.
A frenectomy needs to be performed if the frenum attaches too high on the gum, creating gum recession, or preventing two teeth from meeting, creating a space, this is typically found between the front two teeth. Many children are referred to our office by their orthodontist to remove the frenum between the top two front teeth because they cannot close the spaces between the teeth without a frenectomy.
After Dr. Jacobs or Dr. Bogart uses a local anesthetic to numb the area, the frenum is removed by either scalpel or laser. If a scalpel is used, stitches will be placed. If the laser is used, no stitches are necessary. You can discuss which option is right for you with Dr. Jacobs or Dr. Bogart.
Depending on the location and size of the frenum, post-treatment is relatively uneventful. We recommend you avoid citrus fruits or drinks which are acidic and can irritate the treated area.
