Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small, titanium posts that serve as replacement tooth roots. During surgery, Dr. Jacobs or Dr. Bogart carefully place them into small incisions in your gum line. Afterward, your bone grows around each implant, integrating them into your jawbone.

Dental implants can support a variety of oral prosthetics, including dental crowns, dental bridges, and implant-supported dentures. This makes them an excellent replacement option for one, several, or all of your permanent teeth.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Dental implants provide a wide range of benefits over traditional dentures, including:

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Easier eating
  • Clearer speech
  • Improved biting and chewing abilities
  • Durability
  • Convenience
  • Better oral health

Dental implants can also improve your confidence and self-esteem. They restore structure to your jaw, eliminate excess wrinkles and folds, and make you appear younger.

Can anyone receive dental implants?

Dental implants are safe and well-tolerated, but they aren’t for everyone. Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Bogart conduct a thorough oral exam, review your oral and general health history, and ask you questions about your treatment goals. They also take a series of digital X-rays and 3-D images to get a closer look at your jawbones and tooth roots.

It’s vital you have plenty of bone volume in both your upper and lower jaw. If you don’t, Dr. Jacobs or Dr. Bogart might recommend a bone grafting procedure or sinus lift before moving forward.

Certain health factors like high blood pressure and diabetes may increase your risk of complications. Smoking and vaping also complicate treatment outcomes. If you’re living with these or other issues, let your provider know during your first appointment.

Does it take more than one appointment to get dental implants?

Getting dental implants usually takes just a few appointments spaced three to six months apart.

If Dr. Jacobs or Dr. Bogart determines you’re a good candidate for implants, they administer local anesthesia and place a series of small metal posts into your gum line, one for each missing tooth. Following the first surgery, you return home to heal for three or four months. During this time, your bone grows around each implant.

Dr. Jacobs or Dr. Bogart will monitor your healing progress over a four to six month period, at which point you will be referred to your restorative dentist to have the oral prosthetics fabricated.

Once you have the final restoration in your mouth, Dr. Jacobs or Dr. Bogart will review oral hygiene procedures to ensure you can keep your new dental implant clean and healthy.
